The Mexia Blackcats led by Head Coach Norman Cobb had a historic run in the 1989 football season. The Cats finished the season 13-2-1 overall. The Blackcats went through Marlin, Sealy, Newton, La Vega, and Needville on their way to the state title game. The Crunch Bunched named by Lee Roy Crook would face their toughest task yet with the Vernon Lions. The Blackcats and Lions would play at HEB Pennington Field in Bedford, Texas in below freezing weather. Vernon took a 7-0 halftime lead over the Cats. That lead would grow to 14-0 in the 3rd quarter before Mexia made it 14-7. It seemed like the Cats were back into the game before the Lions answered back, making it 21-7 with under 10 minutes to play. Running Back, Dwayne Cooper rattled off a 56 yard touchdown run to swing the momentum Mexia's way. The Cats converted for 2 points, making the score 21-15. Chris Miller found Kevin Morton for an 11 yard Touchdown pass and the go ahead PAT attempt made by Kiley Cobb. The Cats went up 22-21 with 6:06 left in the game. The Crunch Bunch Defense held strong at the end, holding the Vernon Lions out of the endzone. Chris Miller and the Cats offense would run the clock down to a final kneel. The Mexia Blackcats Celebrated the 1989 Class 3A State Championship!
