The Blackcats and the Goats have met 79 times on the gridiron. Mexia dominates the series with an all-time record of 54-23-3. Mexia won the first meeting 10-0 in 1901. Mexia owns the longest win streak in the series at 13 straight, lasting from 1999-2011. It is a rivalry marked by blowouts as the game is rarely close.  In fact, there have been 31 shutouts. Groesbeck held the largest margin of victory, a 53-0 shutout in 1915, until Mexia broke it in 2000 when they beat the Goats 55-0. There have been some nail biters in this series. In 1989, kicker Kiley Cobb hit a last second field goal to defeat the Goats, 10-9! It has been a rivalry dominated by the Blackcats as of late. In the last 20 meetings, the Blackcats are 17-3. Groesbeck has not won The Battle of the River back to back years since 1991 and 1992. The Rivialry was renewed in 2022 where Groesbeck took at 37-36 win over Mexia in overtime at Blackcat Field.
